Pekan lalu, Nunik ditugaskan menguji sampel tahu yang dikumpulkan tim Liputan6.com dari empat pasar swalayan di Jakarta.

Pengujian dilakukan untuk menelusuri keberadaan zat kimia berbahaya tersebut pada makanan. Selain Nunik, pengujian sampel dilakukan pula oleh tiga rekannya. Tiga rekannya yang menguji sampel tahu dari lokasi berbeda tidak menemukan keberadaan formalin.

Formalin merupakan senyawa kimia yang terbentuk dari reaksi oksidasi metanol. Salah satu sifat formalin adalah mematikan bakteri pembusuk. Karena itu formalin banyak dipakai sebagai pembersih lantai atau zat pengawet mayat.

Selain tahu, pengujian juga dilakukan terhadap sampel anggur impor yang juga dijajakan di pasar swalayan. Hasilnya, dua dari empat sampel yang diambil dari pasar swalayan berbeda positif mengandung formalin. Seorang teman Nunik mendadak cemas terhadap hasil pengujian tersebut. “Padahal saya sering beli anggur di pasar swalayan ini,” katanya dengan mimik wajah khawatir.

Pengawetan menggunakan bahan berbahaya ini, katanya merupakan modus umum bagi pedagang yang ingin menekan kerugian. “Makanan yang diduga mengandung formalin bisa saja ditemukan di pasar modern atau swalayan,” ujar Dewi. Dia memastikan formalin juga masih ditemukan pada bahan makanan dan buah-buahan yang dijual di pasar tradisional.

Dia melanjutkan, pengujian yang dilakukan lembaganya menemukan tahu sebagai jenis makanan yang paling sering mengandung formalin. Tahu, katanya, merupakan jenis makanan yang cepat membusuk sehingga perlu ditambahi pengawet buatan. Setelah tahu, Balai Besar POM Jakarta juga menemukan mi dan bakso sebagai makanan yang kerap diketahui mengandung formalin.

Dokter forensik sekaligus pengajar dari Universitas Indonesia Djaja Surya Atmadja mengatakan formalin merupakan bahan kimia yang bersifat korosif. Dia mengatakan, banyak jenis kanker yang bisa dipicu formalin. Di antaranya kanker hidung, kulit, otak, dan usus. Adalah kanker usus yang disebutnya sebagai penyakit yang paling banyak diderita orang yang mengkonsumsi formalin.
