Beliau melanjutkan,
والعلماء منهم من يحدُّ أكثرَه وأقلَّه ، ثمَّ يختلفون في التحديد ، ومنهم من يحد أكثره دون أقله والقول الثالث أصح : أنَّه لا حدَّ لا لأقله ولا لأكثره
“Di antara ulama, ada yang menetapkan batas masa haid maksimal dan minimal. Namun mereka berbeda pendapat tentang berapa rincian batas tersebut. Ada pula ulama yang memberi batas maksimal masa haid, namun tidak memberi batas minimal masa haid. Ulama lain berpendapat – dan inilah pendapat yang benar – bahwa tidak ada batas minimal dan tidak ada batas maksimal masa haid.” (Majmu’ Fatawa, 19:237)

Cirinya berbeda dengan darah haid. Hukumnya pun berbeda dengan darah haid. Darah istihadhah bisa dibedakan dengan darah haid melalui empat hal:

2.) Kekentalan: darah haid lebih kental, sedangkan darah istihadhah lebih encer.
3.) Bau: darah haid berbau amis, sedangkan darah istihadhah tidak amis karena dia adalah darah yang mengalir di pembuluh darah.
4.) Kering/tidak: Darah haid tidak mengering jika telah keluar, sedangkan darah istihadhah akan mengering karena dia adalah darah dari pembuluh.
Jika seorang wanita mengalami haid, dia tidak boleh shalat. Akan tetapi, bila dia mengalami istihadhah, dia tetap wajib shalat; dia cukup membersihkan darah istihadhah tersebut (misalnya mengganti pembalut atau pakaian yang terkena darah istihadhah, pen.) dan berwudhu setiap hendak shalat, jika darah istihadhah tersebut tetap keluar ketika waktu shalat berikutnya tiba.
Meskipun darah tersebut keluar selama mengerjakan shalat, tidaklah membatalkannya.

Dengan demikian, dia wajib mandi suci dan mengerjakan shalat (ketika waktu shalat fardhu tiba). Namun jika di kapas ada bekas merah, kuning (keruh), atau coklat, maka janganlah dia shalat dulu, (karena itu artinya dia masih dalam masa haid).

Jika muncul lagi cairan kuning atau cairan keruh setelah dia suci maka cairan susulan tersebut tidak perlu dihiraukan. Dia tidak boleh meninggalkan shalat dan dia tidak perlu mandi suci lagi, karena dia tidak wajib mengulangi mandi suci lagi dan dia juga tidak dalam keadaan junub.
Dalilnya adalah hadits dari Ummu ‘Athiyah radhiyallahu ‘anha,
كنا لا نعد الصفرة والكدرة بعد الطهر شيئاً
